Well you may not think it's hard to stop smoking cigarettes, but it is. I wanted my friend to stop. They wanted to stop, but they said they were to addicted, but they felt bad about doing them...
You could try to help him, but it's normally something you will do on your own, but who knows you could help him and try!

Does he want to quit?
You could try hypnotism, i know it sounds weird. But if part of his brain is convinced that his cigarettes tastes like something awful then it will help him desire to stop.
There is also a WONDERFUL aid called stop smoking herb that you can smoke while you take it, but slowly you will find you think less and less about smoking. Next thing you know, you haven't even thought about cigarettes. Gum and patches just give someone a chance to become addicted to some other form of Nicotine products.
Remind him that you want him to be around for your life. Tell him that you know its hard, but in the back of his mind and heart he knows its the right thing to do.
Best of luck

There are many medications out there such as Zyban, Chantix and nicotine replacements ranging from fake cigarettes to patches and gum. Nicotine is not dangerous for you and in fact is used in medicine to treat ailments such as Parkinson's Disease. The danger of smoking is more from the other substances found in tobacco and in cigarettes specifically.
For lighter smokers or not heavily addicted smokers I recommend using a patch step down if needed or perhaps one of the two approved medications for nicotine withdrawal such as Chantix or Zyban. For heavy smokers I do NOT recommend these. Instead I believe that you need to consult a very sympathetic doctor and discuss a chemical detox using alprazolam and diazepam (Valium).
To understand why I recommend these I want to walk through the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Nicotine withdrawal causes a multitude of symptoms throughout the body and most specifically in the first 72 hours which slowly subside over a 7-10 day period. The symptoms can range from physical to psychological.
The physical symptoms of nicotine withdrawal in the first three days include cravings, a chest tightness, heart palpitations, sore throat, constipation, flu-like symptoms, headache, dizzy spells, feeling faint, coughing, mouth ulcers (canker sores caused by the body detoxing), anxiety and feelings of depersonalization and derealization (time is distorted and you feel like you are not yourself but all is in slow motion or surreal).

Really there is nothing that you can say that is going to stop him/her from smoking. I am 59 years old and I smoked for 22 years. I started smoking when I was 15 years old. Everyone kept telling me to quit, but I was hard headed and I kept on smoking. I saw my father-in-law die with emphysema at the age of 67. He would take a puff off a cigarette and take a hit off of his oxygen tank. We couldn't get him to quit either. At that time I had only been smoking for about 8 years so you could say that I saw cigarette smoking kill him and it didn't make me quit. About 10 years later I was told by the doctor that I had emphysema and I continued smoking for another 3 years. So I guess your friend will quit when they are good and ready. The more you pressure them the more they will smoke. Maybe one of these days these DAMN FOOL that smoke will open there eyes and quit smoking. If it doesn't kill them first.
