They may wish they didn't smoke, but still like doing it. My dad smoked since he was 16, and I remember him trying to quit on 4 different occasions and it didn't stick. It took him being hospitalized at 52 for emphysema and his doctor telling him if he didn't quit smoking now he wouldn't live to see his grandchildren to finally motivate him to finally quit and stick with it. Many hospitals have support groups for people who want to quit smoking. It might be helpful for your mom to be with others who are in the same situation.
