What Are Some Genuine Benefits Of Smoking?

I know full well the negative effects of smoking cigarettes. They are printed on the packs. Please don’t reply ‘gives u cancar’ or whatever, because that is not what this question is asking.
What are the genuine benefits of smoking? Here are the ones I can think of;
- Can relieve stress.
- Speeds up metabolism, helping you lose weight (allegedly).
- Stops you eating and therefore can help weight loss.
- Is a social activity. Can instigate conversations, eg. asking for a light.
- Looks cool. Think Jimmy Dean or other such icons.
- Smoke repels mosquitos. I’m not sure if this is true, but I think it may be.
- Gives you something to look forward to, eg. a long shift at work.

The only benefit to smoking is that if you are miserable and want to die you won’t have to stick around so long if you smoke, you can die sooner!
EDIT: There have been some studies done that show that smokers are more productive at work when compared to their non-smoking counterparts. But in later life this benefit is offset by time missed from work due to smoking-related illnesses.

There are NO benefits of smoking, whatsoever…

As a longtime smoker, I’d like to first acknowledge that it’s refreshing to see a question like yours at this time in history. It wasn’t so long ago that almost everybody smoked cigarettes with carefree abandon. Between the asker’s examples and Erika’s answer, I have to say I agree with all. The only thing I have to add is that smoking is a big part of my job and it pays the bills. If that’s not a benefit, I dunno what is.

Since I am a smoker, and have been for many years I can tell you some actual benefits:
I have one that’s a skull and also one that’s like a horse shoe. It’s really neat.
* It does make you look cool, depending on the crowd you hang out with.
* It does alleviate my stress greatly. It’s like my time to relax, when I have a cigarette in hand.
* I like the way it smells actually. I don’t care what other people say or think. I just like it.
* There are actually some really cool looking ashtrays you can buy.
* If you are into smoking marijuana, having a cigarette after getting stoned ups your high by 23%.
* You are right, it is a good conversation starter.
* You can get some really neat things in the mail, especially from Marlboro. My mother in law does.
* I don’t know if the weight loss thing is true, though I have heard it. I’m not overweight but I know a lot of people that are that smoke.
* Also, having to do with weight, kinda, after a meal a cig settles my stomach quite well.
That’s about all I can think of off the toop of my head but I’m sure the list can go on, as well as the cons could lol.

It helps you to think and to wake up. people who have smoked before a exam have been known to do better on it.

You’ve put a lot of thought into this! While most of your “benefits” for smoking are superficial, I’d like to first off state that in my opinion, there are NO benefits to smoking!
But, in the spirit of the question, I think smoking serves as an appetite suppressant. It doesn’t speed up the metabolism, fyi, it just makes you feel like not eating. It can also make a person feel more comfortable in certain situations, as “smokers” often hang together. Oh, smoking can get you out of tense situations (using the “I have to go have a cigarette line to leave an uncomfortable situation is classic lol). I can’t think of much else, sorry. But I did try!

I agree with most of them apart from the mosquitos which is not true. I know of another one: The only disease which is partly prevented by smoking is Parkinsons disease. There is research which shows that the change that you get Parkinsons disease is halved by smoing. Overall this benefit si too small to counteract all the negative effect of smoking though.

Also repels members of the opposite sex. Makes you look unattractive, which is great if you are good looking and self conscious about it

I realized that you put in “metabolism” in your list. Here are some other ways to speed it up.
Metabolism is essentially the speed at which our body’s motor is
running. The speed at which our body burns calories is called the metabolic
rate. It’s how fast your “motor” is running when you’re still in a
reclined position or sleeping. About 60-75% of energy is expended by the
body at rest in such activities.
The metabolism is based on the number of calories we burn throughout
the day. Our body constantly burns calories to keep us going whether we
are eating, sleeping, cleaning etc. People with a lower percentage of
body fat (i.e. muscular) have a higher metabolism than others that are
less muscular because muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than
fat. Some people have a slower metabolic rate and have a harder time
staying slim. Younger persons have higher (faster) metabolism because of
the increased activity of cells. A slow metabolism actually causes to
store fat. The slower the metabolic rate, the greater the weight gains.
How to build muscles to improve metabolism? What type of exercise is
ideal that speed up metabolism so that you burn calories even at rest or
sleep? There are simple exercises that speed up the metabolism.
Causes for Low Metabolism
* Fasting
* A low calorie diet
* Snacking throughout the day on high sugared foods (candy, colas,
cakes, gum).
* Eating or drinking too much sugar containing foods.
* Lack of physical activity.
* Underactive thyroid.
Metabolism Boosters
There are some natural metabolism boosters (natural foods) that
improves your metabolism. Do not take over the counter pills containing animal
thyroid extract that claim to boost up metabolism. These products may
have side effects as diarrhea, increased heart rate, excessive
sweating, nervousness, tremors, bulging eyes, etc.
How to Improve (Speed up) Metabolism
* Do not skip any meals
* Exercise daily
* Build your muscles
* Avoid alcohol, sugar, and fastings
*Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.
*Eat foods with high nutrition values

… ummm – it gives you something to spend $4.00 a day on (if you’re a single pack a day smoker, that is).
… you learn to breathe shallow (thus making you right at home in places with crappy air quality)
… it makes radical changes to your blood pressure (I’ll let you decide if that’s good or bad)
… it kills your taste buds – so you can eat crappy food and never worry about knowing how bad it REALLY tastes.
… it lets all the frat-boys know that you (as a gal) have an oral fixation

There are NO benefits to smoking. It doesn’t relieve stress…as a matter of fact it contributes to it, but in your own MIND it is helping you feel better. It does speed up your metabolism, but because you smoke it is harder to exercise. It does not stop you from eating. You can instigate conversations with other smokers, but not non smokers. It does not look cool, it looks bad. And if you want something to look forward to after work, tape your favorite show or cook your favorite meal…or stop off for a coffee. Treat yourself to a good book, there are many other things out there for you to look forward to after work. Smoke does repel mosquitoes..but it is healthier to use bug repellent. I used to be a smoker…and franky I wish I still was because I still crave..but these are the facts. Smoking is not good for any reason.

No benefits! Whatever you say like relieving stress or social activity.. cant you do it without smoking? If not, you got problems (shy, unconfident), so you got stuff to work on. Educate yourself to know how can you relieve stress in a healthy way, find healthy motivation, use cream, spray from mosquitos etc.
