I agree.. It is all about willpower. I smoked for a very long time.. and when I decided to quit.. I just quit.. I didn’t try to wean myself off by smoking less and less every day.. I just stopped smoking.. stopped buying them.. and stopped feeding my addiction..
I suppose some people are just stronger and have more willpower than others.

  2. mcw7267 Says:

i dont smoke, but it is probley really hard to stop.
    smoking is stupid

  3. tcoJCoLDS member Says:

you sound like my dad, he was never addicted, he could put them down anytime. Not everybody has that ability. Its like asking someone to quit breathing, it’s almost that hard.

  4. riloh keen Says:

because “being addicted” is an easy excuse.
the simple fact is, humans do what they want to do, and they dont do what they dont want to do.
if you desire to quit MORE than you desire to keep smoking, you will quit no problem. i smoked a pack a day for five years before quitting cold turkey over a year ago, and i never had a single relapse.

  5. Lonewolf Says:

I’m a smoker myself. I tried to quit many times. It’s the withdrawal symptoms that suck. I get headaches, tremors, mood swings, upset stomachs, anxiety, high stress, and depression.
It’s really hard to quit, especially when you smoke over a pack and a half a day. I’ve tried quitting cold turkey and weaning myself off but it never worked. Three months later I start back up. I think it is also a mental thing too. When I’m really stressed out or tired I tend to smoke more.
I want to quit. I really do, but I haven’t found anything that really helps. My g/f has asthma and the cost of buying cigarettes are just unreal. I quit once for three months when my then wife was pregnant with our first child, but started back up after she was born.
It’s not a hobby. It’s not a habit. It’s an addiction. Those that say, “just quit smoking” never lit a cigarette before. It’s not that easy. If you were a smoker, you’d understand.

  6. incognit Says:

People who smoke are addicted to the nicotine in tobacco. Nicotine is just as addictive as heroin or crack…Did you know that the drag a smoker takes from a cigarette is the same as ‘free-basing’ a crack pipe???
That’s why I call them ‘crackheads’ because it’s no different! It kills me when they say they’re not drug addicts! Nicotine is a DRUG, despite it being “over-the-counter” with the same addictive qualities of ‘harder’, stereotypical drugs…
“Smokers suck, then they cough, later they die!”

  7. pixles Says:

I think the best way is to look at a picture of lungs form a smoker and a non-smoker. Then gradually cut down, slowly. If you do it too fast, cold turkey you will always want to go back. I cut down in 1979 and have had no urge to have another one since.

  8. The_Blue Says:

They are addicted. Nicotine is very addictive. If your body gets used to having it then it doesn’t like ya taking the item away. I could get into crazy medical terms about receptors in the brain and crap but I am tired.
Its the same for people who drink soda with lots of caffiene or coffee drinkers. If they stop they can get the shakes and bad headaches. The withdrawl seems worse then the problems that could develop from continuing their actions.

  9. Anonymous Says:

Yeah, like they said. Been a smoke for years, and it IS VERY HARD to quit. I told my hubby that as soon as I was completely stress free, I would quit. So, I put the burden of blame on him and my daughter for stressing me out all the time. So there!

  10. CJBig Says:

I am not a smoker, but I do know that it is extremely hard for most smokers to stop. It becomes a psychological thing. I have seen some actually have a panic attack at the thought of not being able to smoke. It is not just a hobby, it truly is a physical condition.

  11. WC Says:

This is no act. They are addicted to tobacco, much like another addict is addicted to crack.

  12. Anonymous Says:

    They aren’t acting.

  13. Miss B Says:

nicotine is more addictive than heroin, so its not as easy as that. i can’t quit b/c of that addiction and trust me we all know we are killing ourselves but the addiction is so strong that even realizing that we still smoke. so quit ur high and mighty act!

  14. dj Says:

    grow up

  15. indigoni Says:

You obviously have never smoked. To some people, that’s like telling them to stop breathing. Basically, that’s what happening when you smoke but, it can be almost a necessity in one’s life. And, it’s not a hobby. Most people who smoke, want to quit or have tried to quit. And, they know it’s bad for them. You’re not giving them any new information.

  16. Anonymous Says:

I smoke and it is very hard to stop. I know I need to, but I seem to have trouble stopping.

  17. Harry thePotter Says:

They stop it once they can’t afford it.

  18. SereneSe Says:

no u wont live longer smoking protects your lungs from the millions of radioactive dust particles in our atmosphere so it would b foolish to quit

  19. Jennifer Says:

is there a thing that you’re addicted? perhaps you find it hard too to easily give up on it. that’s what smokers feel towards quitting smoking. it’s an addiction and addiction means great interest in something to which a lot of time is devoted. you can’t let go of the thing you become dependent on in just a snap.

  20. pawn Says:

Have you ever smoked? for a sustained period of time? if not then you have no clue what you are talking about, have you ever struggled with an addiction of any kind? probably not if you are asking such questions. I have 6 wks not smoking, i quit cold turkey, yes it was one of the hardest things i have done, will i ever smoke again, maybe, why, its an addiction and sometimes people are weak, or strong, it all depends on how tough they are mentally, which as a smoker/ and drug addict i can say is what it comes down too. everybody has a different excuse

  21. Lionel M Says:

it is called addiction “when you smoke your hooked”

  22. lady_haw Says:

mr sometimes you people think smoking is so easy for some it is,for us who have smoked for along time it isn`t,like herion it has us,we don`t want to smoke wlel i know i don`t but i get up the courage and next thing i know i have a smoke,so mr think hard on what you say,its a addiction go after the kids and preach to them not to start, gawwwwwwwwwddddddddd

  23. blindri Says:

I am turning 41 next month, and I cannot breath normally anymore. My heart will not keep a regular rhythm. And I still smoke; now I can hear just what your thinking right now. Nothing I haven’t pulled myself aside or laid in bed at night wondering why.
I started smoking at the age of 11 and have been doing it ever since. It’s not normal for me not to smoke at this point. Without it I don’t know what to do or how to act. And I can’t say I don’t enjoy smoking either.
There is a lot more than “Just Stop Buying Them”. When I have tried to quit my family saw that I was visibly depressed and tortured. My wife said it was like she had all ready lost me.
Try an experiment sometime; stop showering, see how long you can go without one. You don’t need it, do you? The way you will start to feel kinda close to what I feel like. You won’t want to go out in public anymore, you feel uptight, disgusted at yourself. Only not smoking is still somehow worse the way it turns your own toughts against you. Now those who say that it gets easier with time, I think they lie just to get you to try. I have never seen any evidence of that in all the times I tried. Six months being the longest I ever made it.
So my family and I have all accepted that I won’t be around forever, who does. God has all different ways of taking you back to him. Most of them gruesome and horrible.
I am just telling him how I want to go.
