Branding Ban Plan To Cut Smoking Rate

The UK Government is considering a ban on the Branding and and placement of logos on cigarette packets, as part of their proposals to cut smoking in Britain.

Proposed controls under consideration by the Department of Health in the UK would include plain packaging, minimum packet sizes of 20 (in an attempt to prevent young people who can only afford to purchase packs of 10cigarettes), as well as a ban on the advertising of cigarette papers.

The Dept. Of Health has released “The Future of Tobacco Control” consultation document as part of a bid to lower smoking rates as well as preventing young people starting the habit.

Government figures say that almost a quarter of a millions under 16′s take up smoking annually in Britain and they are 3 times more likely to die of cancer than a person who starts smoking in their mid 20′s

Dawn Primarolo (Public Health Minister) is quoted as saying “Protecting children from smoking is a Government priority and taking away temptation is one way to do this”

“If banning brightly-coloured packets, removing cigarettes from display and removing the cheap option of a pack of ten helps save lives, then that is what we should do, but we want to hear everyone’s views first.”

Children and younger people are more receptive to tobacco advertising than adults, according to research conducted by the dept. of Health, and these and they hope that these latest proposals will help deter teenagers from smoking

The director of anti smoking lobby group forest Simon Clark does not agree with the latest government proposals, countering that the proposed measures will possibly make smoking appear to be “more attractive” rather than putting them off. He went on to say “”Banning point of sale display will make smoking even more attractive to teenagers. Worse, it will drive many smokers towards cheaper counterfeit and smuggled cigarettes.

“Yet again freedom of choice and personal responsibility are being sacrificed by politicians who think they know best. What next? Are they going to ban the display of alcohol and confectionery?” he added.

Mr Clark said: “The best way to tackle youth smoking is through education and proper enforcement of the legal age limit”

ASH, the anti smoiking pressure group Action on Smoking and Health have welcomed the most recent government proposals

However the proposals were welcomed by anti-smoking pressure group Action on Smoking and Health. Ash director Deborah Arnott said: “Smoking is a habit which is passed down from generation to generation and this pattern can only be broken by fresh thinking and a comprehensive cross-government strategy.”
