Some of the best ways to Quit Smoking

Smoking is one of the most dangerous and addictive habits one can adopt. The media has for a long time associated smoking with being trendy and “cool” and this has ultimately “legitimized” smoking among millions. There is no doubt that people do understand and acknowledge the dangers present with smoking but unfortunately, nicotine, the chief component found in cigarette and other tobacco products, is highly addictive. As with all addictions, starting is easy but quitting is not. Most people attempting to quit smoking find themselves locked in a battle where they have to make at least 2 solid attempts before the habit begins to give in. But there is hope. Below we will discuss some of the best ways to quit smoking.Cut packetImage by timtak via Flickr

1. Get knowledge. The first step in the battle to stop smoking is to get knowledge. One has to develop an understanding of the inherent dangers of inhaling nicotine. These dangers include developing lung cancer which is now in the top 5 killers of men and women under 60. Knowledge of how addictions develop and what triggers them is also extremely essential.

2. Getting a support system. Many people attempting to win over the battle to stop smoking end up relapsing back into their old ways because of lack of a strong support system. A support system involves other people like yourself who have overcome the same addiction. These people possess valuable knowledge and skills and can also take you by the hand in your quest to become tobacco free. A strong support group also plays an accountability role in the battle against nicotine.

3. Develop new habits. Addiction experts have always noticed that there is a very likelihood of an addict slipping back into his old ways if there is no notable change of lifestyle. The best way to avoid a relapse is to develop new habits. Sports, reading, movies and even new friends (who don’t smoke) can help in guarding against slipping back into cigarette addiction.

4. Know your triggers. Like all other addictions, smokers find themselves delving into smoking either at certain times of the day or during certain occurrences in their lives. Some people smoke when they are tense, others when they are upset, and others after a meal and so forth. Knowing what triggers the habit is key to developing counter-habits that guard against smoking. This, if paired with developing new habits, is an effective weapon against smoking.
