<p>Giving up smoking, even late in life, may help keep your memory sharp as well as improve your physical health, according to a new study.</p>
<p>It suggests that smoking isn&#8217;t just bad for your body. People who smoke have a worse memory in middle age than people who&#8217;ve never smoked. But giving up smoking, even in late middle age, may help.<br />
What do we know already?</p>
<p>Previous studies have suggested that older people are more likely to get dementia if they smoke. Doctors think that may be because smoking damages blood vessels, including those that supply oxygen to the brain.</p>
<p>Now researchers have looked to see what difference smoking made to the mental abilities of people in middle age.<br />
What does the new study say?</p>
<p>The study found that that people who smoked had poorer mental ability in several ways. For example, smokers did worse on memory, ability to reason, vocabulary and fluency in speech. However, smokers in the study were also older, tended to be less educated and poorer and were likely to do less exercise and drink more alcohol. All these things could have affected their mental abilities.</p>
<p>When the researchers made allowances for these things they still found that smoking was linked to poorer memory, although not to other poorer mental abilities. Smokers were about one-third more likely to have poor memory, compared to non-smokers.</p>
<p>More hopefully, it also showed that people who make healthy changes in middle age, like giving up smoking and exercising more, seem to have better mental abilities.<br />
Tell me more about the study&#8217;s findings</p>
<p>The researchers tested people&#8217;s mental abilities twice during the study, five years apart. But because the study lasted 20 years, not everyone who started the study was around to have their mental abilities tested during the last five years of the study. Researchers found that smokers were less likely to still be in the study, because more of them had died. This means the study may underestimate the effects of smoking on mental abilities.</p>
<p>People who&#8217;d smoked at the start of the study, but gave up during it, did at least as well as non-smokers on tests of mental ability. The study also showed that they were more likely to improve their diet, exercise more and cut down on the amount of alcohol they drank.<br />
Where does the study come from?</p>
<p>The study was jointly carried out by researchers from University College London and Universite Paris in France. It was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a medical journal owned by the American Medical Association.<br />
How reliable are the findings?</p>
<p>This was a very big study, looking at the health of more than 10,000 civil servants over a 20-year period. It was carefully carried out.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s very hard to prove that one thing, like smoking, causes something like poor memory. So many other things can also affect your memory, like your age, your education, or your overall health. The researchers did their best to take account of these, but they can&#8217;t be dismissed.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also hard to know which is cause and which is effect. To put it bluntly, do people have worse mental abilities because they carry on smoking, or do they carry on smoking because they have poor mental abilities?</p>
<p>The results definitely show that smokers have on average poorer mental abilities in middle age. But we can&#8217;t be completely sure that smoking causes all these problems.<br />
What does this mean for me?</p>
<p>If you smoke, you&#8217;ll already know it&#8217;s bad for your body. But this study shows it could be bad for your mind, too. It also tells us that it&#8217;s never too late to give up smoking. Giving up, even in late middle age, may help keep your brain sharp.<br />
What should I do now?</p>

<p>TRANMERE Rovers is giving smoking the boot.</p>
<p>The club is supporting smokers to quit in the New Year by opening its doors to the local NHS.</p>
<p>The club has teamed up with NHS Wirral&#8217;s Stop Smoking Service to provide another community venue where smokers can seek help to quit.</p>
<p>Every Thursday, between 5-7.30pm, from January 8, smokers can either drop into Prenton Park&#8217;s Bunny Bell Suite for confidential help and advice or alternatively, people can pre-book on 630 8383.</p>
<p>The service is free and trained advisers will be on hand to offer one-to-one or group support with stopping smoking, advice on a range of treatments available and ongoing support for up to 12 weeks</p>
<p>Anyone who joins the scheme and gives cigarettes the boot in 2009 is in with a chance to win a Tranmere shirt or signed football.</p>

<p>Smoking is the process of taking in tobacco smoke from a pipe, cigar, or cigarette through the mouth and into the lungs, then exhaling it out. People have been smoking tobacco for over thousands of years. American Indians, for instance, used it whenever there were religious rituals.</p>
<p>Oftentimes, people first start smoking as a means of relaxation or pleasure, then escalating into becoming a hobby, and finally, gradually developing into a habit, albeit a bad one. Based on studies done by the American Cancer Society and American Lung and Heart Association, one of the leading causes of the increase in the premature death rate is smoking, and that one out of every five deaths in the United States is a result of it. It kills little by little not only smokers, but also those who inhale secondhand smoke, like your children, as the smoke is being absorbed by their organs that are still developing.</p>
<p>Smoking actually takes away 13 to 14 years out of one&#8217;s expected lifespan, as it is a primary cause of coronary diseases of the heart, chronic obstruction in the airways, as well as cancer of the lungs. With such tobacco consumption, it is estimated that around 6.4 million children will be losing their lives too soon. On top of that, 85,000 men and 65,000 women have already died because of lung cancer and bronchus diseases. According to economic reports, around $100 billion is being spent on annual health care and medical costs, which greatly affect the economies&#8217; productivity.</p>
<p>What is ironic is that despite all these figures that are being published and warnings that are being advertised and even placed on the actual cigarette packs, millions of people, instead of being alarmed and encouraged to quit, still continuously practicing this undesirable habit.</p>
<p>We are, of course, not discounting the fact that there are also a number of individuals who have successfully stopped smoking. However, in order to raise the number of people who do, it is important that those who have been able to get rid of the habit help encourage others and help them overcome their addiction. There are also special clinics for rehabilitation that teach smokers how to avoid scenarios that make them think about smoking, as well as help them cope with stress. They even have seminars wherein people who have lost family members and friends because of smoking speak up about their experiences. This is actually quite a helpful eye-opener to a lot of smokers in today&#8217;s society.</p>

<p>Since cigarette smoking has been seen as a form of drug abuse, new programmers of treatment have been developing rapidly. Many of these apply principles learned over the years in treating drug abuse and alcoholism. One is that the effect of the drug in the brain is the single most critical factor to consider. It is this effect which maintains the compulsive drug-taking behavior of a person for years, or even a lifetime. This is a fact essential to effective treatment programmes.</p>
<p>As mentioned earlier, the drug of abuse can be substituted with a similar but safer drug (like nicotine chewing-gum), or the effects of the drug can be blocked (for instance, mecamylamine like drugs can be used as a sort of immunization procedure). Alternatively, if nicotine is providing some therapeutic effects, like stress relief or weight control, then these effects might be replaced by appropriate treatment using either more appropriate drugs or non-drug treatments (for instance stress management or diet plans).<br />
An equally important principle that has been learned from drug abuse treatment is that non-drug factors are also important and must be considered for effective treatment. It is probably obvious to smokers, if not to others as well, that the pleasures of smoking are many and include taste and smell, the social interactions which they make easier, and even the actual handling of the cigarettes.</p>
<p>Another important set of non-drug factors is the degree to which tobacco use can become an integral part of behavioural patterns. For instance, just as a tennis player may find it necessary to bounce the ball, or adjust his or her socks before feeling comfortable enough to serve, so too might a writer feel unready to face the typewriter without lighting up a cigarette first. The ability to function may be disrupted by the abrupt termination of smoking, and it may take years before the person &#8220;feels right&#8221; doing many things. Many writers, for instance, feel that to give up smoking would seriously impair their very livelihood. If we consider that a cigarette smoker may light 10,000 cigarettes and take 100,000 puffs per year, it should come as no surprise that smoking may become an important part of the smoker&#8217;s life.</p>
<p>Treatment of cigarette smoking must address the possibility that other drugs are also being abused by the smoker. People who abuse drugs tend to abuse several. For instance, sedatives and alcohol are often abused by the same people, morphine and cocaine are often used jointly, and people who abuse any drug are likely also to smoke cigarettes (more than 90% of opiate and alcohol-dependent persons smoke cigarettes). This finding has led to treatment programmes that focus on all of the drugs abused by individuals.</p>
<p>The last major set of findings that have emerged from studies of drug abuse is that stopping can be accompanied by years of sensitivity and susceptibility to relapse. In some cases the sensitivity may be partially due to physiological changes. For instance, with the upload drugs, a secondary and more subtle withdrawal syndrome may persist for six months or more after the initial withdrawal has subsided. Additionally, environmental stimuli may serve as cues which elicit withdrawal-associated discomfort. When this happens, relapse is more likely. In this regard, studies with bothopioid drugs and tobacco have shown that stimuli associated with the respective form of drug taking (pictures of needles for the opiate users, smell of cigarette smoke for the cigarette smoker ), can elicit such responses: both physiological, such as increased heart rate and sweating and psychological, such as discomfort and desire to take the drug.<br />
Other kinds of stimuli may also enhance the likelihood of relapse. These include social situations, stress, and anxiety. In the context of drug abuse, relapse is simply one character-is tic. It does not mean that treatment has failed or that the person is a failure. It simply marks a point to restore, possibly with modification, treatment.</p>
<p>If all of the above does not make the treatment of cigarette smoking seem like a hopeful Endeavour, at least it should provide an appreciation of why success rates are generally considered good if a particular programmed achieves 30% abstinence on a one-year follow-up.</p>

<p>It is a sad statistic that only about one in four people who receive treatment for cigarette smoking / nicotine dependency is still not smoking one year later. The great majority of people will relapse within a period of just a few months. The success rate for smoking cessation programs is not very much different from that for beating heroin addiction or alcoholism. Cigarette smoking is widely recognised as a form of drug abuse in which nicotine is the critical drug. As a form of drug abuse, cigarette smoking has much in common with other forms of illicit drug and substance abuse including cocaine and heroin.</p>
<p>These observations have major implications for how cigarette smokers should be treated. Hopefully, as these implications are considered they will help to improve the efficacy of all kinds of quit smoking treatment programs. The position taken in this article, that cigarette smoking is a form of drug abuse, is based on a huge amount of evidence with regard to the overwhelming importance of the role nicotine takes in relationship to the smoking habit or addiction. It is consistent with the position taken by the World Health Organization, the International Union against Cancer, and official bodies in the United States such as the United States Public Health Service and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.</p>

<p>All that is found here on this earth today was created for a purpose, and a good purpose at that. However, when something is used wrongly, it can create serious damages. Just like in the case of tobacco. Tobacco actually has a number of medicinal benefits, but because it is being abused, it is now one of the leading causes of cancer and health diseases. What God originally intended as a gift is now instead converted by humans into a hazard.</p>
<p>A lot of information can actually be found on the dangers of smoking, via newspapers, television, even in the Internet. We are constantly warned by healthcare professionals and even the government about how harmful smoking is to one&#8217;s health. Compared to non-smokers, a smoker&#8217;s lifespan is decreased and a lot of them die young.</p>
<p>What is disturbing though is that despite all this, there is a steady increase in the number of individuals who smoke. Such is the case in a study done in Nigeria, wherein the production and purchase of cigarettes, as well as the death rate because of smoking, has risen.</p>
<p>Not only has there been an increase in the mortality rate of smokers, but those of passive or secondhand smokers as well. In the UK, approximately 11,000 people have died within a year just by inhaling smoke puffed out by smokers.</p>
<p>Death can be a result of natural causes, old age, stress, unemployment perhaps, as well as structure of a household. But based on research conducted on death causes, smoking is the top cause of death.</p>
<p>Currently, experts in the health and medical fields are pushing for the absolute ban of smoking in public areas, such as restaurants, malls, public vehicles, and institutions, as well as the enforcement of rules and regulations for protection against the harmful effects of smoking.</p>
<p>Despite knowing that tobacco is quite harmful, it is still continuously being grown in farms and cigarette manufacturers and producers are earning millions out of it. We are putting the lives of the ones we love at risk by burning a lot of money buying this stuff despite the warnings being placed on the packs that &#8220;Cigarette Smoking is Dangerous to your Health.&#8221;</p>
<p>All this information should be a heads up to law makers and the government to take the necessary steps to ensure that the dangerous effects of smoking are lessened. These steps should not be limited to just banning cigarettes. Other related drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, should be banned as well.</p>
<p>On top of that, there should be a strong willpower and determination on the part of smokers who want to quit. There is nothing impossible as long as one puts their mind to it. Just think positive and have the strong resolve never to smoke again. By doing so, we are ensuring the future of the youth and the lives of our children.</p>

<p>The tobacco plant is a member of the vegetable family Solanaceae. The plant was named Nicotiana abacus in honor of the French ambassador to Portugal in the 1850s, Jean Nicety, who believed the plant had medicinal value and encouraged its cultivation. One chemical constituent of tobacco is nicotine. When cultivated with various chemical fertilizers and insecticides, pro-cussed into cigarettes, and finally burned, many other physical constituents result.</p>
<p>Tobacco smoke contains thousands of elements. Most are delivered in such minute amounts that they are not usually considered in discussions of the medical effects of cigarette smoking. In fact, there are so many that it will take years of research to discover which constituents are harmful. Thereof undisputed importance, however, are tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine.</p>
<p>Tobacco is defined, rather arbitrarily, as the total particulate matter (TPM), minus water and nicotine, which is trapped by the Cambridge filter used in smoke collection machines. Persons who have used ventilated- cigarette holders in an effort to give up smoking have probably noticed the accumulation in the filter of a thick, black material reminiscent of road tar. Tar, not present in unburned tobacco, is a product of organic matter being burned in the presence of air and water at a sufficiently high temperature. Tobacco products such as snuff and chewing tobacco do not deliver tar.</p>
<p>Tar is one of the major health hazards in cigarette smoking. It causes a variety of types of cancer in laboratory animals. Also, the minute separate particles fill the tiny air holes in the lungs (the alveoli) and contribute to respiratory problems such as emphysema. In the light of these facts many cigarette manufacturers have reduced the tar yields in their cigarettes in an effort to provide &#8220;safer&#8221; cigarettes. Unfortunately, tar is important to the taste of the cigarette and the satisfaction derived from smoking. Thus, when many people smoke low-tar cigarettes, to get maximum enjoyment they inhale so deeply that they defeat the purpose of this type of cigarette. It is ironic that cigarettes engineered to deliver low-tar yields when smoked by machines deliver higher yields when smoked by people.</p>
<p>Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that results when materials are burned. Carbon monoxide production is increased by restricting the oxygen supply, as is the case in a cigarette. Carbon monoxide is also produced by internal combustion engines (as in cars) and even by gas cookers and heaters. Like carbon dioxide (CO2), which also results from burning, carbon monoxide easily passes from the alveoli of the lungs into the blood stream. There it combines withhaemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin (Cobh). Hemoglobin is that portion of the blood which normally carries carbon dioxide out of the body (CO2 is produced by normal metabolic processes) and oxygen back into the body. When the hemoglobin is all bound up by either carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide, a shortage of oxygen may result.<br />
A critical difference between carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide is that the former binds much more tightly to hemoglobin and is very slow to be removed. Thus the blood can accumulate rather high levels of carbon monoxide and slowly starve the body of oxygen. When the cardiac system detects insufficient levels of oxygen, the heart may begin to flutter and operate inefficiently. In extreme cases heart attack may result.</p>
<p>When people smoke normally, their CO levels are lowest in the morning and level off at their highest values by midday. The typical twenty-per-day smoker achieves levels averaging between 25 and 35 parts per million. However, even these &#8220;average&#8221; smokers may hit short-term levels of greater than 100 parts per million. Firefighters are now routinely checked with portable CO analyzing machines while combating fires. If their levels exceed 150 parts per million them may be relieved and given oxygen, since even these generally healthy people run a risk of heart attacks.</p>
<p>Nicotine is a drug that occurs naturally in the leaves ofNicotiana abacus. It is generally thought of as a stimulant since it provokes many nerve cells in the brain and height-ends arousal. However, its effects are so complex that no simple label is completely accurate. For instance, by stimulating certain nerves in the spinal cord (Crenshaw cells), nicotine relaxes many of the muscles of the body and can even depress knee reflexes. Its effects also vary depending on how much is smoked. For example, nerve cells that are stimulated by the nicotine from a few cigarettes may be depressed by smoking more cigarettes.</p>
<p>Nicotine closely resembles one of the substances that occur naturally in the body (acetylcholine), and the body has an efficient system to break nicotine down (detoxification) and eliminate it in the urine (excretion). In fact, when given dose of nicotine is ingested, for instance by smoking, about one-half is removed from the blood stream within 15to 30 minutes.</p>
<p>Another feature of nicotine is that it is well absorbed through the mucosa or the very thin skin of the nose or mouth which is dense with capillaries. This is why chewing tobacco and taking snuff are effective ways to ingest nicotine. In the form of cigarette smoke, nicotine transfers directly from the alveoli of the lungs into the arterial blood stream and rushes directly to the brain. It requires less than 10 seconds for inhaled nicotine to reach the brain, so that even though the quantities are small, the effects may be strong. This is even quicker than giving nicotine intravenously, since the venous blood supply must first pass through the heart, then into the arterial stream of the lungs and, finally, to the brain.<br />
Repeated exposure to nicotine, when it is smoked, re-salts in very rapid tolerance or diminished effect. That is, during the day, as cigarettes are smoked, the smoker gets less and less of a psychological and physical effect—even though toxins are building up in the body. In fact, much of this tolerance is lost overnight. As a result, cigarette smokers often report that their first cigarette of the day &#8220;tastes the best&#8221; or may even make them lightheaded if smoked too quickly. As the day wears on and more cigarettes are smoked, people often smoke more out of habit or to avoid disco-fort than for pleasure.</p>
<p>Research to date on the hazards of cigarette smoking suggests that nicotine is not as hazardous as the tar and carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke. Its role is more insidious, since people ingest these other substances (tar and CO) as bay-product of their efforts to obtain nicotine.</p>
<p>Cigarette smoke is made up of both a gas phase and particulate phase. Together they include more than 4,000substances. Automatic cigarette-puffing machines have been devised to collect and to study smoke.</p>
<p>During a puff, the unburned cigarette is comprised of many organic (tobacco leaves, paper products, sugars, nicotine) and inorganic (water, radioactive elements, metals) materials. The tip of the burn-in cone in the centre of the cigarette reaches a tempera-true of nearly 1,093 degrees C. (2,000 degrees F.) during puff. This tiny blast furnace results in a miniature chemical plant, which uses the hundreds of available materials to produce many more. In fact, some of the most important parts of tobacco smoke (including tar and carbon moon-oxide) are not even present in an unburned cigarette, but are produced when a puff is taken and the cigarette burns.</p>
<p>The mainstream smoke is collected from the stream of air passing through the centre of the cigarette. It is filtered by the tobacco itself and perhaps further by a filter. It is also diluted by air passing through the paper (most modern cigarettes also have tiny ventilation holes which further dilute the smoke).</p>
<p>Side stream smoke is that which escapes from the tip of the cigarette. It is not filtered by the cigarette and results from a slightly cooler burning process at the edge of the burning cone. Since the tobacco is therefore burned less completely, the side stream smoke has more particulate (unburned material) in it.</p>
