Cigar Smoking - The Health Risks

Nowadays everyone is very aware of the health risks connected to cigarette smoking, but does cigar smoking carry the same risks, a lesser risk or even a greater risk?
The National Cancer Institute says that smoking cigars on a regular basis can indeed be a major risk to health. Scientific research has connected smoking cigars with cancers found in the lungs, larynx, mouth and throat. More recent findings have indicated that cigar smoking is possibly linked to cancer of the pancreas. Smokers who regularly inhale cigar smoke are at a greatly increased risk of suffering both heart and lung disease.
The Risks associated with health have been measured to dramatically increase in smokers who smoke cigars on a regular basis and inhale the cigar smoke. A Person who smokes just 3 or 4 cigars a day will be increasing the risk of suffering a diagnosis of oral cancer by eight times that of a non smoker.
A Lot of people wonder if cigar smoking carries the same addiction as smoking other tobacco products such as cigarettes. For example a huge amount of smokers find themselves addicted to cigarettes but far smaller number smoke cigars. The fact is that all tobacco products are addictive simply because they contain nicotine. Take for example the effects of “smokeless” tobacco products such as chewing tobacco or snuff, these also can become very addictive due to the fact they all contain nicotine.
Most people who smoke cigars do not inhale the smoke deeply; therefore the nicotine is only inhaled superficially into the lungs. Cigarette smokers generally inhale the smoke deeper into their lungs allowing the nicotine to be absorbed by the lungs more readily. Even taking into account the suggestion that cigar smokers inhale less nicotine, it is still likely that they will become addicted if they smoke cigars on a regular basis over a period of time.
Why don’t people who smoke cigars smoke more often? It would seem that cigar smokers avoid getting hooked for various reasons. The main reason seems to be that because cigar smokers inhale less smoke/nicotine, also cigars are generally less available than cigarettes and are regarded as a “treat” or luxury item, associated with special events.
Smoking cigars regularly can still become addictive, and bring with it all the associate health risks, with those risks increasing dramatically as the number of cigars smoked increases.
