Can You Become Addicted To Nicotine From Second Hand...
My whole family smokes and i have been around second hand smoke like my whole life. I am now in college and for the first few weeks i had bad headaches and i was real jittery. When i go home i feel fine and relaxed but when i come back to college i the headaches and the jittery feelings come back for a few days. Am i addicted to nicotine from second hand smoke or is it just all in my head for some reason. If you have sites to back up your answers that would be great. And if you have any advice on what i should do, please share! Thanks

The answer is a qualified yes, in that I’ve seen occasinal accounts of mild withdrawal symptoms here but am not aware of any studies. The effects you report are certainly consistent with mild withdrawal, though I don’t know that I’d call them addiction, since while the effects are unpleasant they aren’t sufficient to force you to use the drug. Also, keep in mind that nicotine is a psychoactive drug known for its calming qualities, and some of those will be experienced when you’re exposed to second hand smoke. So even if you aren’t going through withdrawal you may miss the calming effect you’re accustomed to from minor exposure.
Unfortunately, I can’t really suggest a fix. You could use a nicotine replacement product but because you’ve been exposed to minor levels it would very likely make you sick or more addicted. Ditto for e cigarettes or other nicotine delivery devices, or stop smoking drugs. The only thing I can suggest is avoidance.
