Do Your Lungs Heal After You Quit Smoking?

I heard somewhere that 5 or so years after you quit smoking your lungs heal up. Is this true?

Yes! In a year, those lungs will be pink again! :)

It’s true that some changes due to smoking are reversible, but others are not, but the damage that has been done already will always keep you below what’s considered normal. For example, inflammatory changes are reversible, but emphysema is not. The risk for lung cancers is highest in smokers > former smokers > those who have never smoked.
