Have You Ever Given Up Or Tried To Give Up Smoking?
I’ve got an appointment at my medical centre ( new fangled name for doctors surgery, apparently) on weds 7th November to make me give up smoking.
My nurse (never actually seen my doctor before, dont even know if its a ‘he’ or a ‘she’) has been on at me for over a year to pack up.
It’s not that i have any immediate health issues, just that it is recommended to promote better health.
I have been smoking for 20 years or so and actually like it. i enjoy my ciggie when i get out of work or when i’m having a tipple.
Granted, i know it stinks and i don’t smoke in the house, and i have tried before to quit but failed.
On the one hand i’d like to stop because of the financial and obvious health benefits, but there’s a little nagging feeling inside that makes me nervous……………..
Do you think i can do it? i’ve been a nicotine addict for more than half my life. it has become a way of life.

I smoked for 28 years (didnt realise that until I counted it up just now), and like you I liked smoking. the whole act of taking out a fag and lighting it up, was nice. But I stopped 3 years ago and its the best thing I ever did. I can actually breath now.And if you only knew just how bad it really does smell. Anyway if I can do it so can you. Good luck.

I’ve never smoked, so I’ve no idea how hard it is to quit. I’ve got friends and family who have tried to quit with varying degrees of success, from total failure to complete success. Seems to depend on the individual. I hope you can do it, it’s got to be better for you not to smoke.

There is no point in trying unless you 100% want to stop. any niggly doubt will mean that at the first chance you will probably start again!
My hubby has tried 5 times to pack up and beacuse he like you has smoked for soooo long its incredibly hard to do even more so if youre not sure that you want to stop! It takes one hell of a lot of will power and inner strength to do it. good luck I hope you manage to do it.
Hubby did really well on his second attempt to stop he lasted about 4 1/2 months without one……. then he started again because HE was stressed because I was in labour!!!!lol
P.S. The drug that debbie b mentions is called zyaban its very good and did help my hubby a lot , but it has some quite nasty side effects make sure you are aware of these if you decide to try it. Again its very good at helping you stop but only YOU can stay stopped!!! good luck

Congrats on considering quitting. Yes, you CAN do it if you really want to.
I used the new prescription drug Chantix to quit, & as a bunis it comes with a year of professional support.
I had been a smoker for over 20 years, was up to over a pack a day. Within weeks of starting the prescription I was finished. Had one cig since then & put it out after a few puffs ‘cos it was back to beign as gross as my first one in hight school.
Yes, I had tried to quit before. Used patches, gum, acupressure, acupuncture, hypnosis.
Until Chantix, my best time for smoking was being pregnant – I went from a half-pack a day to one cig a month, folks said “why don’t you just quit” & I said because then I wouldn’t know when my next drag was. For the next 15 years I was a closet smoker, my son never knew. I smoked at the bar, in the barn, never in the house & never around him. Now I don’t have to run outside in the snow & rain, don’t stink, & save a ton of money!! But I had to quit for myself & for anyone else.
Good luck!
You CAN do it!!

Smoked for nearly 30 years, gave it up overnight when I had a Heart attack that nearly killed me, followed by something called a Full Block when the Electrits stop making your heart beat properly.
The HA and Block where bad, but the recovery takes a long long time and I now have a damaged heart.
I smoked 60 fags a week many people smoke more than twice that.
This is the most important thing you can do to live long and prosper.
Today you can get all sorts of help, tablets, chewing gum or patches.
BUT whatever way you choose DO NOT GIVE UP Giving UP.
Don’ t give up smoking in the morning and fail later and have a ciggy. At least you didn’t smoke the early ones.
Keep giving up.
Good luck and best wishes to you.

You can quit but you have to be ready to do it. I quit twice after smoking for about 30 years. The first time I stayed quit for several months then started again due to stress on a job. The last time I quit was over over 20 years ago.
The way I did it was based on something I heard over TV. The person said not to tell yourself you are quitting. The mind can’t take that shock. Just tell yourself you are putting off the next cigarette. I did that and went 24 hours without one. After smoking that one I realized I needed to put a little more effort into it. I started my time from the time I went to bed and next morning it was 8 hours, then noon was 12 hours, then dinner time was 18 hours, then bed time and by the next morning I had 30 or more hours. I carried a pack in my pocket for about 2 weeks before I threw it away. For a long time I would think “this is when I used to enjoy a cigarette” but after a couple of years even that went away.
I’m glad I did because that preponderance of evidence is that it it really is bad for you. In my generation non-smokers were a rarity. I had several aunts and uncles whose death were related to their smoking.
YOU HAVE TO WANT TO DO IT!! Good luck

aww i know how hard it is to give up , i have been trying different things ..patches ..hypnotherapy for ages and the closest i came to giving up was using gum. i too have been smoking since i was about 16 (47now) i have asthma and emphysema so i know it is killing me but OMG it is so so hard to stop because like you i do enjoy my ciggies, but i do believe if i could just do away with that first on when i Wake up then i would seriously have a good chance of stopping…trouble is my will power is not very strong lol aaahhh well one day maybe . good luck with stopping i hope you find something that works for you xx

I loved smoking more than just about anything. I gave it up when I got pregnant. I was completely miserable for about three weeks. I’d think about tackling people on the street to steal cigarettes out of their pockets. That was 8 years ago. I haven’t gone back to smoking. You can do it too. Good Luck!

I have been smoking for 40 yrs and I ask myself the same quesitons as you everyday! If you want to quit, you will. I do not believe in all the remedies that are on offer-it has got to be from yourself and for yourself. I hope you do quit-if you do, please let me know if it was you alone that did it! Good luck.

I smoked cigarettes from ages 11 to 41, thirty years and gave it up 8 years ago. I had to take a drug, I can’t remember the name of it, but it started with the letter z, to get me through the very difficult process. I still have cravings but I believe it was the smartest thing I ever did in my life. I wish you the best.

I quit smoking for 3 months using the patches. They certainly took away the need for a cig but not the wanting!
I decided I was happier as a smoker.
The thing is, you’ve really got to want to stop to beat it otherwise it’s hell.
Are you nervous about how you’ll cope without a cig or about going to the medical centre?
If you decide to give it a go, best of luck.
