How Do You Get Someone To Stop Smoking While Pregnant?
i just found out my almost step-mom is 3 months pregnant with twins. she’s a bit older, 35, and she is a baby nurse so she knows all about babies. this is her 4th pregnancy in her life and she is still smoking. how can i get her to stop?! i don’t want my siblings to be harmed and they have already had 3 months of it. it upsets me very much. what do i do?

Its best not to just quit all of a sudden, but she does need to ween herself off. If she is a nurse, she should know this. You can’t force someone to stop smoking. Have you told her that it upsets you?

Try not to get mad and fly off the handle; it is very, very hard to quit smoking. I know you’re probably thinking, “What’s she doing?! She’s pregnant–why doesn’t she stop?!” and that’s understandable. I’m sure she feels guilty about it, but the physical withdrawls are horrible and she’s probably been smoking for so long, it’s just so much of her daily routine (not that that makes up for anything). She can’t use nicotene patches or gum, so it will probably be extra hard for her. I think you and your father and the rest of your family should try to support her as much as you can. Let her know you care about her and the babies and give her praise when she goes so long without a cigarette. If she’s a heavy smoker, going without one for 3 or 4 hours might be torture to her and she may feel like if nobody realizes that, then she feels she’s not getting support. Tell her good job when she tries no to have one. Believe me, it’s so hard, but just convince her that in the end, she will have two healthy babies to make up for all her trying! Good luck!
