Actually lot of people quit smoking but the reasons why its so hard to quit:
1. Emotional problems – lack of self esteem
2. Unable to realize that smoking is a sick habit
3. Family, social or life problems – too much stress, anxiety and depression.
Number 3 is the most common reason why people start to smoke.
There are many reasons but these are the main ones I see people having problems with quitting smoking.

The primary reason is the addiction – both physical and emotional. You’re not only addicted to the nicotine, but smoking helps you stuff down emotions (note that when people stop, they often become irritable and angry). So, it’s a way of dealing with your feelings. Another reason, often, is that smokers simply like smoking…. like some people love candy or a certain food. Having been a smoker (though no longer), I can attest to the power of the physical & emotional addictions and not wanting to stop simply because I loved doing it.
Also, most people think quitting should be done cold turkey, though the withdrawal is intense and the craving is intensified. The only successful way I’ve quit is by tapering off: smoking half of one only every other time until down to a few puffs a day. Then your body is used to doing without it and you’ve had time to develop other ways to deal with your emotions. Otherwise, the cold turkey method is just a shock to the system.

First off it is a very powerful addiction, some people are more prone to addicting behaviors than others.
It is a very hard habit to break, It is an outlet for anxiety, stress, and coping with difficult things.
It is something non smokers will never undestand, it is not as simple as just quitting. Of course smokers realize it is not healthy, and if it were that simple no one would smoke, because most smokers do not want to smoke.
I smoked for 15 years, quit several times, and started again, now officially smoke free for almost two years, after sticking with the full patch program. But the main thing that made me quit was watching my mom die from cancer at the age of 52, after that I knew I could not and will not smoke again. In her honor I will never pick up another cigarette ever.

there is the obvious physical addiction to the nicotine which is a big factor. there is also the fact that a lot of people connect smoking with their emotions and smoke when they get stressed (similar to emotional eating) and it gets hard to stop that kind of association. then there are the people who just don’t want to quit. anyways, hope this helps.

My mom smokes all the time and i know she does it a lot because shes always stressin out.My dad also quit for about a month but as soon as he got stressed he started back up again. So i think thats a huge reason. A lot of people just dont have the determination either. Any bad habit can be broken but if the person isnt willing to try it wont happen.

Social pressures
People who are constantly nervous
Addiction overtime
and yeah, even though a lot of people know they’re only smoking to be part of some crowd, they lack the discipline and mind strength to stop.
