I Recently Quit Smoking Cigarettes And I Am Very...

I quit smoking a few days ago. I have been doing really well with the cravings but I feel so emotional. One minute I am happy, the next I want to cry. When I have tried to quit before I was just crabby. Are these mood swings normal? Any suggestions to help me beat the habit?

I quit smoking May 1. Its now been 4 full months and 11 days since I quit.
The first week was horrible. I wanted to kill myself.
The first two months, I was an angry ex-smoker. I made it my business to be rude to smokers and to tell them how horrible they are.
Month 3 I chilled out, but still dreamed about smoking almost every night. I thought of it almost every day and almost started smoking again twice when life got really stressful.
During month 4, and up to now, I still think about it every day, but I feel sorry for my former self and for those who still smoke. I can’t believe how I let it control my life, something that disgusting. I love how I feel without all that poison in my body. I am 95% sure that I’ll never be addicted to smoking again, though sometimes I do think about having “just one”. But if I have just one, that will lead to one pack, to one week, to me being hooked again. I can never smoke again. NEVER.
When you first quit, count the hours, the minutes that you haven’t smoked. Then, think that if you start again, all those minutes and hours of not smoking will have been wasted. Once you get to where I’m at, you can look at it in terms of days and months.
    Trust me, it gets better.

Probably. You have cravings. Better to see you cry than lash out.

yup its normal — i suggest finding things that help put you back in your happy place
any comfort foods that are non fattening, etc. i went through lots of gallons of mint tea. you can try dietary supplements for mood enhancing readily available at Wilmar like 5-HTTP. natural foods stores usually sell herbal drops that help a lot.
i went through a weird stage for about a month where i was fine around my friends that were smoking but i had a compulsive desire to beat up strangers and steal their cigarettes — how is that for messed up?

  4. G Says:

completely normal. your body is going through withdrawl.
sugar is key. have some chocolate every few hours when you feel crabby.
the sugar high should negate the nicotine withdrawl until you stop feeling it.

Of course they are. You are stressing your body by giving up a habit it craves. I so so emotional with such wide mood swings that everyone walked on tiptoes around me. It took a good month or more to lose the emotions. Honey, just keep working at it. Let yourself cry it out. Take it one minute at a time, keep hands and mind busy. Remember, the actual craving passes in 7 seconds. So staying busy helps. Don’t worry about the emotions, they too, will pass.

  6. db2byl Says:

yes. it is very normal. your body is missing the nicltine and until its all out of your system it will continue. but it will go away. good luck

It is very normal. My husband has been smoking since he was 14 and he is now almost 50 ys. He recently quit smoking and his moods have been up and down. HIs emotions are on a constant roller coaster. Don’t give up, it’ll pass. Just think how many more years you’re adding to your life by quitting-smoking.

  8. metalgod Says:

Yeah it’s normal, cause usually you depend on a cigarette to calm you down but don’t worry you’ll be fine

  9. Leggo My Eggo Says:

  10. Robin Says:

this can be the normal, your body is trying to get rid of the nicotine, and the receptors in the brain is not use to the shortage of the nicotine. It should pass in about 3-5 days. The best thing i found to help with the cravings was to drink a COLD glass on water, for some reason it worked for me. Oh and don’t just hang around doing nothing, that’s was when I was wanting one real bad, because I was bored and what is the first thing you do when bored- light one up,
    Good Luck

ANY TIME YOU GET A MOOD SWING, TRY CHEWING A PIECE OF GUM . THE MOOD SWINGS ARE A MANIFESTATION OF WITHDRAWAL, JUST LIKE A CRAVING, OR BEING CRABBY. YOU COULD ALSO TRY DRINKING A GLASS OF ICE WATER, THAT HELPED ME QUIT ABOUT TWELVE YRS AGO. BUT DEFINITELY KEEP A PACK OF GUM AROUND. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NICOTINE GUM (NASTY STUFF) BUT A STRONG WINTERFRESH GUM WILL WRK GOOD. THE STRIDE GREEN OR BLUE PACKS WORK. ANYTHING ELSE, EMAIL ME AND I’LL BE GLAD TO TALK TO YOU OR HELP IN ANY WAY I CAN.

yah well if u have been smoking for awhile n then go cold turkey, stuff like that will happen. u will get moody and also might gain weight..which happened to me when i cut back so much from a half pack days to couple packs on the weekened and then went to bout 2 or none a day!! but its great because when i smoke i barely finish the whole cig and its just nasty.

  19. Tom Says:

I feel exactly the same. I gave up 2 days ago and I just feel really sad and pathetic, feel like I want to cry and I’m taking everything people say really to heart.

I am going to go to the gym tonight as I’ve heard that this helps.
