Is Going ‘cold Turkey’ The Best Way To...

If someone has been a smoker for over 20 years and wants to quit. Is it safe to stop the nicotine suddenly and are there side effects? I’m curious from those that have actual experience quitting. I hear about this new drug that supposedly helps but it’s by prescription only and I’d be leary of it’s side effects as well. Suggestions welcome for someone who desparately wants to quit and stay smoke free.

    Are you talking about Nicabate?
I would say at best when you are really, truely ready to quit, you will be able to do it cold turkey. I don’t really think the pills, the patch, the inhaler, nicorette gum works at least for the long run. If you really want to you’ll just get up one day and think of how unhealthy it is for you. When I finally made up my mind to do it, I just did it. I smoked for 19 years…been smoke free for 31/2! I wanted to start getting back in shape and realized how it affected my lifestyle. I pretty much made the pro and cons list.
    You can do it!

NO!! try minimizing your cigarette consumption. if you smoked 2 packs.. try reducing that to 1 and a half for a week, then a pack, then half of a pack, until you go down to one stick a day. eventually, it’ll just stop.
halting completely immediately can produce some serious lung diseases. Not that smoking doesn’t, but ceasing immediately is more prone to those diseases.

no it isnt safe. i tried a few times cold turkey and i went through some bad withdrawals. i will use my tax return to see the doctor and get some kind of prescription help because for some reason i can’t do it alone. :-|

Sorry girl but yah it is the best way. You just gotta find something in your self and say enough is enough. You have to make that desicion and never pick up another smoke no matter what.
Don’t substitute one addiction with another. The withdrawls will probably be very bad…it wont be easy. Thats why they call it an addiction. My dad quit smoking for good after over 20 years. New years day( new years 2000) he said thats it! and he stopped. He was a grumpy d*ck for 3-4 months but he hasnt touched it since. He lost weight, was in good shape….he says he feels better and his skin looks better.
good luck…..no need for luck though ;)

My doctor prescribed wellbutrin. The good thing about this is that you can also use the patch. I took it for 3 days and the desire was gone. Unusual I know. I also smoked for 40 hrs. You have to really want to quit in order for this to work. With Wellbutrin alone, you can still have a butt, but it’s best not to. No smoking with the patch. I wish you well. You can do it. If I could, anyone can. Good luck

Yes it is. There isnt another way. I quit about 6 years ago, after trying a couple of times. My husband quit from smoking 50 in one day- again he had a tried a couple of times before he succeeded. Remember the nicotine withdrawal actually only lasts for about 3 days and craving for the next smoke for about 3 minutes. So it can be done.
On hindsight I remember I did a lot of things which were positive life changes before the urge to quit became strong- regular swimming, Yoga, Reiki, shedding toxic company etc. Suddenly there was no place for smoking in my life. So instead of quitting smoking maybe if one starts with doing healthy happy things for oneself, smoking might be easier to quit- my theory.

My husband quit after 23 years of smoking up to 60 a day. (He quit before we met!)
He just decided enough was enough, and binned the packet he was busy with. And vowed never to pick up a ciggarette again.
He hasn’t smoked for 5 years now.
Quiting is different for everyone – you have to find the method that works for you.
One thing I can say VERY VERY CERTAIN – you WILL DEFINITELY be able to quit, if you want it enough.
Honestly – don’t waste your time with countless ATTEMPTS to stop smoking if you are not really, REALLY ready to quit. It only demoralises you, and makes you lose faith in your ability to quit.
My sister has smoked for 35 years. She has tried to stop probably 100 times each year. She has even joined that famous guy’s classes who guarantees your $10,000 back if you start again: guess what – she started again (and got her money back)…
The moral of the story – she is not ready to quit.
Sit it out, think about it very, very carefully. Ask yourself why you want to stop… is it REALLY necessary to stop… only once you can convince yourself that you are ready to stop, you should pack it in.

    Hi,
I quit this time last year having had a 30 a day habit. I’d tried and failed with allsorts until I a friend recommended this program – see below.
It also came with a 100% money back guarantee and has a 90% success rate – can’t say fairer than that!
    All the best.
