I’ve Smoked For 5 Yrs And Want To Quit. I Know...
I have read everything I can about why to quit, the benefits of quitting, plans for doing it, aids to help with cravings. I understand all that. My concern is that while I want to quit, I still like smoking. I am disgusted by it, but I still enjoy the actual act of doing it. I am scared to quit because I feel like I am just going to fail like all the other times I have tried. I want to make this count, I just need to get my attitude right and find personal motivation. Being that I have none, I am seeking for tips.
***NOTE: While I appreciate all feedback, please do not rattle off cancer statistics, planning methods or support group numbers. I already have those. If you have any advice for the mental “game plan” and how to change how you THINK about smoking/quitting, then I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Don’t give up after just one try (if you fail the first time). Be persistent. This is really one of the better things you can do for yourself!

I have the same problem. I really want to quit, but when it comes time and I give it a shot, all I can think about is how nice it is to actually smoke, even though I know how rotten it is and how much I want to quit! There has to be a way though, other people have done it.
This doesn’t actually help though, so um, i dont know gah sorry.

hey LawSchoolBarbie interesting yet truthful question there.
Well I suppose your motivation lays in a number of things. First use the facts to motivate you by considering how much healthier you will be 20 years from now as compared to a situation were you continue smoking.
You said it well “I want to make this count”. There is another way to make it count. Your situation is powerful because you are being honest with yourself. What if you use that as a launch pad to a quit success in order to do out-reach to hundreds other people possibly teenagers who are in the same predicament. Your success will unlock their own answer and success. Believe me there are possibly thousands of people who want to quit but are facing similar challenges as you are facing today. When you succeed you will really unlock their healthy destiny through your tips and experience. Your failures will also be their strengths.
Not that you should feel bad or obliged to unlock the success of others, but if you do they will forever be grateful. You may reach them through your local community activities/schools and colleges. You may even start your own unique blog on this.
You may also sign-up with leading quit smoking forums and present the same question. Am sure there are hundreds other brilliant ideas. I have found those communities to be really supportive and appreciative full of tried and tested tips and strategies.
