Quitting Smoking?

Ideas for quitting smoking, benefits of quitting smoking, and odds of cancer if it runs in the family-by not quitting.
Anyone who has info. it would be great. I am a smoker and have tried to quit smoking unsuccessfully.
My grandpa smoked his whole life but didnt suffer any cancer or heart disease or anything like that, he died of natural causes at 78, so I havent experienced first hand anyone with negative effects in my family from smoking.
What are some incentives to quit?
Please help. Thanks.

I’ve been smoking for 25 years. After all this time, I have decided that enough is enough. I spoke with my doctor just a few days ago and he told me about a new medication on the market that aids in quitting. It’s called Chantix and he gave me a prescription for it. I plan to start this program (12 weeks or so) in the next couple of weeks.
The medication is expensive and my insurance won’t cover it.
I’m tired of waking up coughing and still lighting a cigarette as soon as I get out of bed. I hate that I lost my singing voice. I hate that I get short of breath. I hate the social stigma of being a smoker and being treated like a criminal because I smoke.
I’m only 37. I started smoking when I was 13 or so. It doesn’t make me feel good. It’s not cool to smoke. It’s stupid is what it is. God only knows why I ever started.
    I’ll keep you posted.

I took Chantix. I tried patches, puffers, gum and hypnotherapy nothing worked.
I took Chantix for 7 days and on the 8th day I threw my cigs away. That was 5 weeks ago. Things taste better, I can go up and down stairs without getting winded. My hair don’t stink no more!
    PS
    I smoked for 35 years.

As someone who thought smoking was “cool” and started at 16, I say quit yesterday. Cancer is not the only threat. So are all kinds of respiratory diseases as the lungs cannot repair themselves, even if you quit. The stench of cigaret smoke in someone’s hair, clothes, and skin is a big turnoff. I quit cold turkey and sweated out the first 72 hours. Then it was just a head trip. I haven’t touched another cigaret. If I can do it, anyone can who really wants to.

CONS: Heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, carotid artery stenosis, cancer, COPD, a tracheotomy (big hole in your neck), chemotherapy, oxygen tank to carry around with you!
    PROS: NONE
Ways to quit: Lozenges, gum, patches, prescription meds like wellbutrin, chantix

my parents went cold turkey and just ate suckers and candies like that. and being around a smoker is a serious mood killer because they have to stop the fun so they can smoke. plus i hate being around someone who is smoking or right after they smoke because they stink. plus my parents smoked and all of MY clothes stank.

Well, my best advice (being a nonsmoker, so I wouldn’t know first-hand your addiction) is that not to go cold-turkey. I would suggest you take it slowly. For example, if you smoke 20 ciggarettes a day, for one week smoke 19, next week smoke 18, the slower you go, the longer it will stick. Good luck!

I quit from one day to the other and haven’t been smoking for 4 years. The most important thing is willpower, your body will only want it for a few more days but your mind will crave the cigs for a very long time. That your grandpa got lucky doesn’t mean anything, that is just another excuse for you to continue smoking.
Smokers all say that they could quit if they wanted to and they do it for the fun of it. Smoking isn’t fun! It smells and stinks, it is a social stigma and makes women look trashy!
Accupressure is a good way to quit smoking, go to your doctor and inform yourself about it. I wish you good luck with your task, you can do it.
