The Benefits Of Stopping Smoking When You Are Pregnant...
I have gone from smoking 20 cigarettes a day to 3 as i am ttc. I have been researching the benefits on stopping and this is what i found –
The benefits begin straight away.
You reduce your risk of getting serious disease no matter what age you give up. However, the sooner you stop, the greater the reduction in your risk.
72 hours Breathing becomes easier. Bronchial tubes begin to relax and energy levels increase
1 month Skin appearance improves owing to improved skin perfusion
3–9 months Cough, wheezing, and breathing problems improve and lung function increases by up to 10%
1 year Risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker
10 years Risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker
15 years Risk of heart attack falls to the same level as someone who has never smoked .
I am finding it quite hard but i have lots of determination. Can someone help me by telling me some more ADVANTAGES OF STOPPING SMOKING. Thank you very much

You will just feel SO much better.
My fiance and I were both smokers before we found out I was pregnant with our son. I would go through a pack a day as would he and we were wasting SO much money on cigarettes. That was around $8-$9 a day. Only just a day. Times that by a month. Lets say a month has roughly 30 days. Multiply that by 8 and that’s $240 down the drain for us that could have gone to something more important. I was smoking for 6 years.
Once I found out I was pregnant, I quit in 3 days. No cigarettes since then, not one. I feel so much healthier. I had more energy. I was happier because I didn’t have an addiction and it’s needs didn’t need to be met any more. I’m also saving much needed money now.
My fiance is in the process of quitting though and is doing great at it. He went from smoking a pack a day to about 3-5 cigarettes. It is also harder for him to quit as well, but he will get there some day.
Reasons to quit:
Increased risk of SIDS
Increased risk of birth defects by 30% when smoking half a pack a day. (missing fingers/toes or being webbed)
The babies cells could be deprived of oxygen
Increased risk of low birth weight
Baby is absorbing same chemicals as you are
Could cause lung problems in the baby
Increased risk of premature birth and/or labor
Increased risk of stillbirths

To keep your mind off of smoking:
- Make a list of all the reasons you should stop smoking, whether it is health reasons, reasons for the baby, or money issues. Make a list and hang it some place where you will see it every day to remind you of the benifits.
- Find a healthier habit. Chew gum or create a fun habbit for yourself. I found taking walks in the park with my fiance was a good way for me to become overall healthier while keeping my mind off of smoking. It’s not easy to smoke a cigarette, talk and walk at the same time.
- Develop new habits. Instead of having a cigarette after a meal, directly do something else to pass the time.

One of the best advantages of quitting smoking other than health reasons is all the money you save!
Cigarettes are very expensive and are going to become more expensive with the new taxes they will be imposing.
It’s hard to quit but you can do it. You will feel much better in the end!
The first two weeks are the hardest but try to surround yourself with people who don’t smoke and keep yourself busy. Out of sight -Out of Mind.
Good Luck

since you are trying to concieve when you do get pregnant think about low birth weight and how proud you will be when your hard work makes your baby healthier in the long run its hard to stop smoking you may slip a few times but do not give up maybe slip a picture of a baby toy or a family members baby in your cigarette pack so when you grab your pack you see the picture and it will change your mind. good luck!

Your kid won’t grow up to be a smoker. My mother started after my 2nd brother (he was a problem child), so she smoked with me. Out of 3 kids, only I am a smoker.
Can’t say that it stops mental problems, that is more factors than just smoking, hasn’t impared my abilities (military linguist), graduated with honors.

Well I know that every cigarette that you smoke takes 7 minutes off of your life so that be 21 minutes you’d be adding on a day and 147 minutes a week, 7,644 minutes a year or 5.3 days a year. That can be increased too if you quit completely! It truly is a good route to go for you and your future babies!!! Good Luck at trying to conceive and quitting… You can do it!!!

Your sense of smell comes back. You don’t have to worry about smelling like smoke all of the time. You feel better about yourself as a person because you’re taking care of your body. You save a ton of money.
You’re doing great. Keep working on it. Soon you’ll be down to no smokes!

I hadn’t cut down when I fell pregnant but have stopped cold turkey as soon as I realised I was pregnant. I’m addicted to my little bean right now, don’t even want to smoke.

i am a non – smoker and i hate smoke!! smokers can have a healthy baby and some do have low weight babys or premeture babys…..but even if you do have a healthy baby, when you smoke, you are still breathing it out for 20mins aftarwards, so even if you smoke outside, do you really want to come in your house to your baby and start breathing toxines all over him and in his face, and also your babys clothes will smell of smoke (my partners dad smoked outside, and everytime he came home from there house he smelt so bad of smoke, but smokers cant smell it) and also when it is just you and your baby in the house, insead of your baby being main priority, do you really want to be sticking your thoughts on when your next ciggy is going to be!! congrats on cutting down so much already, youve done great!! x

i wish i could stop too! anyways i didnt stop while i was pregnant with my daughter because i didnt with my son and he was almost 8lbs and very healthy so i thought whatever cigarettes wont hurt the baby but when i had her (early)she weighed 4lbs and had to stay in the hospital for a week while i went hoe which was the hardest thing i have ever done it almost killed me i felt so guilty. so you never know whats going to happen but it deff cant hurt to quit while your pregnant. they almost cause premature birth, plus your baby is addicted when they are born which makes them super fussy from withdrawl just like you are when you dont have nicotine. SMOKING DOESNT MAKE YOUR BABY MENTALLY RETARDED. GRRRR i hate stupid people.

Well done. It is so important that you dont and you are doing so well. just try to think how you can stop completely. I am an NLP practioner, i use hypnosis alot to change unwanted behaviour. I also used it in hypnobirthing when i gave birth. I was induced which is very painful and used hypnosis for pain relief and only had gas and air the last 45 mins of my labour which they couldnt believe. My babys hearbeat stayed 120 throughout & midwife said i was so calm baby stayed calm.
my point is this stuff really works. why dont you invest in paul mckennas stop smoking dvd. they say play it every day but when i gave up i only needed it about 3 times and that was it. i had no symptons. hope this helps and well done x

You are absolutely right to try and quit smoking! As hard as it might be, it will be best for you and your child in the long run!!!!
You seem to already know the benefits for your self, but in terms of the effects on your unborn child (once you do conceive, because you are trying and won’t find out for a few weeks once you do)…
Smokers usually produce smaller babies.
Smoking during pregnancy has been linked to ADHD and anger management issues in the unborn child.
There is a higher rate of stillborn babies in smokers.
There is a higher rate of SIDS in the babies once they are born of smokers.
The babies of smokers are at a higher risk of being born premature.
Children who’s mothers smoked while pregnant have a higher rate of asthma.
Good luck, stay strong and do what’s right for you and your baby!
