my dad is trying to quit smoking and he said that he has gained weight from it, and i was just wondering how you can gain weight by trying or just flat out quit smoking?

I quit smoking in 2007, and I did not gain weight. I am very active, and exercise as much as I can. The key is for your dad to eat healthy foods and exercise. He is substituting food for cigarettes. He needs to put something in his mouth instead of cigarettes, so he is choosing food. Tell him to chew Trident gum, and to get on the treadmill. He will be fine now that he has quit smoking.

Many people do gain weight while quitting smoking. Smoking creates an oral fixation.. The act of bringing the cigarette to your mouth becomes habitual. Many people eat to fill that ‘need’. Others eat because it’s something to do other than smoking.
Quitting itself however doesn’t cause weight gain.

Because nicotine is a stimulant, it increases your metabolism and reduces your appetite. Smokers way something like 15 pounds less than non-smokers on average. And when you stop and go through withdrawal it has the opposite effect, it makes you super hungry! You stuff food in your mouth.

When to stop smoking – EVERYTHING to eat tastes better – even stuff you didn’t even like before! If you snack all the time & don’t get much exercise – then you pile the weight on. It’s always much more fun putting that weight on than it is taking it off!

quitting smoking slows down your metabolism so add that on to your dad being old(older people have slower metabolism)= he is gonna gain weight. the best thing to do is buy some fruit and any healthy foods and start gettin active. also drink water helps out a lot

you look for something else to b addicted to, it may be he eats a lot instead of smoking
or you need to hew on something to get rid of craving
