Ok for one thing to all those women who answer negatively… shut up…she was just asking a question… no need to put her down or even call her a bad mother
second thing, i think that you’re a good person, being honest like that. My doctor told me (cause i was and still am a smoker… not heavy though) throughout my whole pregnancy not to quit (and im not the only one who was told this, even my best friend who was pregnant at the same time as me, seeing a different doctor told her the same thing). For one thing quitting would make your body go through withdrawl especially since you would be quitting cold turkey. Second thing it would put so much stress on your body that it could severely harm the baby, and even (in early pregnancy) cause a miscarriage. I was told that 1-2 a day was fine… but try and get it down to one. Granted there were some days i only had one, and other days where i only had half of one.
My son had NO nicotine withdrawl whatsoever!!!! And he was the healthiest baby in the nursery the night he was born. 7lbs 3oz 20.5 inches long, hungry lil man though (eating 8 ounce bottles every 2-4 hours). And he’s still a healthy lil 13 month old boy (32lbs 34-35 inches tall) and still eating like crazy. Hasnt had one problem… no asthma, no breathing problems nothing.
I think you’ll be ok though hun. And dont let these women put you down. they arent worth the air they breathe if they are going to be hurtful and mean just cause you asked a controversial question.
Good luck and take care. Hope you have a healthy baby and a speedy delivery (mine was 18 hours, lol def. get the epidural)

Here is part of an article. I think you should click on the link at the bottom and read the whole article. Smoking during pregnancy can cause TONS of problems for you and your baby.
–Smoking is known to have an effect on babies before they are born. Nicotine, carbon monoxide and other chemicals in tobacco smoke are passed on to the baby through the placenta.
Nicotine increases a baby’s heart rate and breathing movements. Some of the chemicals passed on through the mother’s blood are known to cause cancer.
During pregnancy, smokers have a greater risk of miscarriages. During the birth, they are more likely to have complications. The chances of a baby’s dying at birth or shortly thereafter are increased if the mother has smoked during pregnancy.
Babies of women who smoked or were exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke during pregnancy are, on average, smaller at birth than babies of non-smoking mothers. Smoking mothers give birth to infants who weigh about 150 grams less at term than non-smokers.
Babies born with a lower-than-average birth weight are more likely to get infections and have other health problems.
A clear relationship exists between the number of cigarettes smoked during pregnancy and a slowdown in the growth of the fetus. These babies are more prone to perinatal complications, illnesses and death

Kudos for being honest. I doubt many people on YA would admit they are a light smoker during pregnancy.
I do not know for sure, but I know alot of people who have smoked during pregnancy (More so then those who didn’t to be honest)
and all of there babies are perfectly healthy. I do not endorse it by any means, but generally speaking, all of these babies are fine and in no way “addicited” to nicotine. Newborns cry – alot – so if they were in some way craving nicotine, it would be near impossible to know for sure that that is what is upsetting baby.
I sadly know a baby who was born addicted to heroin and god knows what else. He was a perfectly normal baby, however he did suffer withdrawl and had tremors, wouldn’t feed, and cried for about the first month of his life. Very sad. He is now 5 and has severe behavioural problems.

I am not going to be negative about you smoking but for the love of God, please TRY giving up for the sake of your child. You said you only smoke lightly, what does it matter if you have to give up temporarily. It will be great for you and even better for your child.
There are lots of documented effects on the child whose mother smoked while pregnant, one of which will be a smaller birth weight which can put the child in danger or have him or her end wind up in the NICU unit for a spell.
I am not sure about the addiction but do know from someone I know who was on methadone when pregnant that her baby was addicted to that so it could quite possibly happen.

The baby will probably be underweight, and other consequences could include placental problems, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and stillbirth. The baby will also most likely be jittery and hard to soothe and have withdrawal symptoms. Smoking could also cause a lot of bleedng during labor, but cesarean section could prevent that. The risks may be lower if you were a light smoker, though..I’m not sure. I got all this at a March of Dimes site, so you may want to check it out, and of course, definitely see a doctor and also quit smoking. Good luck to you and your baby!

Everything you put into your body goes to your child. So if this puts it into perspective for you, imagine your innocent childs undeveloped lungs breathing in that cigarette smoke and they cannot tell you that its hurting them or bothering them. Please stop, if not for yourself for the sake of your child. I used to smoke, the moment I found out I was carrying another life inside me I never had the urge to pick up another cigarette. It’s not just about you anymore, thats part of parenthood. Do what you have to do, just stop please for that baby! They deserve the best chance at a life, and if you are willing to compromise that maybe you shouldn’t be having a baby to begin with.

You should have been seeking help when you found out you were pregnant and decided to continue smoking.
Guess you aren’t one of those mothers that enjoys allowing your fetus to grow properly with the right amount of oxygen.
And yes, to answer your question, your baby will come out slightly addicted to nicotene. It’s an addictive substance and since you are pregnant and smoking, some of the nicotene has surely reached your baby.
Good job.

Well my mother smoked with all 5 of her children (including me) and as far as I know she never said that we had with drawl. Also I was 9 when my mom had her youngest, my little sisters who are twins and I saw them the day they were born and from my memory they looked pretty normal to me. All of us were healthy weights too… My oldest brother 7lbs 8 ounces, older brother over 8 lbs (he was late), me 7lbs 11 ounces and my twin little sisters born at 36 weeks, one was just over 6lbs and the other just under 6lbs. So I think you’ll be okay don’t stress to much!
ADDITION
I called my mom last night and she said we were all really healthy and she WASN’T a light smoker… she said she smoked just as much as she did when she wasn’t pregnant. This is some years ago so i’m sure she smokes more now than she did then, but it was probably around a pack a day I’d say. It’s funny because I was surprised that she said that and I was like really? She said what did you want me to lie and I was like uhh yeah!

I smoked with my first child (and again now with my second) with the doctors support. We decided that quiting while pregnant would be to stressful for my and the baby! He was born at 41 weeks perfectly healthy and with no withdrawal symptoms! Also at a completely normal weight. He has also been very healthy so far (no ear infections, strep etc) Also my mother smoked with all three of her children and we weren’t sick at all as children! I think that people who have never smoked should not be so judgmental!

i don’t think so, but i think there is a chance of low birth weight and things like that. my friend smoke throughout her pregnancy, not a lot, but some, and her daughter is always getting ear infection, even at 7! and she was born w/ a low birth weight. so, smoking does effect the fetus

My friend was a “light” smoker throughout pregnancy, and her baby was born eight weeks early, weighing only three pounds. He has has loads of ear infections, now has tubes in his ears at 2.5yo and is speech delayed.

Your baby may cry for the first 24-36 hours and get little sleep- then it will be over. There is also a chance that you will not see any symptoms of withdrawl at all.

keep on keeping on LMAO
Your poor child needs oxygen. Just stop for your own health and your CHILDS health

I cannot believe you are asking this. if you care anything for your baby, stop smoking now, its ridiculous.
January 8th, 2010 at 9:01 am
yes your baby will more than likely experience withdraw.
