Healthy Quitting Habits
Smoking is one of the most potent killers of the 20th and 21st century. This is because cigarette smoke is highly addictive due to the presence of the chemical substance nicotine which is absorbed into the blood stream almost immediately producing a mildly intoxicating effect. It has been termed in literary art as “dry drunkenness” Smoking which is the technically the process of burning, tasting and inhaling tobacco, is practiced recreationally by millions of people around the world but unfortunately lung cancer is now one of the leading killers of people under the age of 60 in the United States and other Western nations.

There has also been a lot of advertising done regarding the adverse effects of smoking. These adverts have had a great ripple effect in society as more and more people come to the solemn realization that each cigarette slashes up to 9 days off their lives. This is not to mention the great risk of lung cancer and other related complications and also skin ailments.
Due to this knowledge, there is a rush to quit smoking by a lot of people. Unfortunately, nicotine is highly addictive and many attempts to give up smoking are met with tough resistance. But there are tips one can adapt to help him or her give up this habit.
The first step is to be very determined. This means resolving within oneself to do everything necessary to complete stop smoking. It is an acknowledgment that there will be good days and bad days but giving up is not an option. This is the winner’s attitude that is necessary in order to quit.
Another step is to have accountability partners. This means talking with someone who will monitor you to ensure there is no relapse. This can be a spouse, a close friend or a mentor. This is usually someone who themselves are not bound by the addictive habit.
Giving up smoking can also be achieved if one embraces knowledge. This is because many smokers do not understand the dangers of smoking especially from a health or biological standpoint. Education is an important weapon in your arsenal against the smoking addiction and can mean the difference between life and death. The Internet has excellent resources on smoking and so are public libraries.
