There are so many obvious benefits to quitting smoking – too obvious to warrant mentioning – but nevertheless, actually doing it is easier said than done. For many people smoking becomes a habit engrained in their everyday lives, a crutch in coping with stress and anxiety, and an inherent part of their social lives. It’s a terrible cliché, but for some, smoking becomes part of who you are.

So in order to quit smoking, people often need more than government health warnings and scary statistics. They need reassurance that they will be able to cope in a world without cigarettes; that their daily routines won’t feel awfully disjointed, that they won’t be constantly craving nicotine, that they won’t feel that something is missing.

Quitting smoking takes immense willpower. But there are also some positive steps which can help you on the road to a smoke-free life. One of the best stop smoking tips is to stay busy – in mind and body. For a heavy smoker, there are dozens of times during the day which are associated in your brain with smoking, for example, standing at the bus stop, after meal times, on the way to/from work, at the pub after work. These times must now be replaced by something else.

For the first few weeks it can be helpful to avoid temptation. For many this might mean avoiding alcohol or the pub after work or any other social situations where you know smoking is on the agenda. Instead try and fill these times with smoke-free alternatives. Exercise is a great way to take your mind off your cravings and remind yourself of the benefits you are making to your health and fitness.

You may also consider taking up a new hobby to fill the times at which you find it most difficult not to smoke. Even simply reading a book or magazine will take your mind off your cravings and thoughts of cigarettes. The key is to keep busy and don’t let your mind persuade you into giving in to your unhealthy addiction.
