It takes 7 seconds for nicotine to travel to your brain. Any smoker knows the feeling when nicotine meets brain. They also know how hard it is to quit smoking. Knowing the speed and impact of smoking and that nicotine rush makes it easier to understand the grip it has on you. These top 10 tips for quitting smoking will help you with the transition to nonsmoking.
1. Break your routine. Change other habits at the same time. Get up at a different time or eat at a different seat at the table. Read the newspaper or check the weather station or your horoscope. Just do something different to start your day. Otherwise the only change you made is quitting smoking and your entire focus will be on that changed. If you break more than the smoking habit, your daily routine changes will not all be smoking related.
2. Sleep longer. If nothing else, it will mean less time during the day to think about smoking. More practically, it will also allow your body to repair to your system for a longer stretch of time.
3. Change your drinking habits. Cut back on your usual beverage and try herbal tea or flavored water. The main thing is to shift away from what you usually drink because drinking your usual drink is usually linked to your usual cigarette.
4. Drink more water. It helps wash out toxins in your system. It also helps your body repair itself.
5. Choose snacks that can substitute for smoking. Low fat snacks such as carrot sticks or popcorn take a little longer to eat than potato chips. These give your mouth something to do other than smoke.
6. Meditate. You don’t have to become fanatic about meditating. A good idea is to lie in bed for an extra 5 minutes in the morning and meditate instead of jumping up and looking automatically for the first smoke of the day.
7. Go for walks. Even a quick walk around the block can distract your brain’s craving center and its urgent demands.
8. Go to nonsmoking places such as a theatre or a restaurant. The entertainment will distract you and it will not be possible to reach for a smoke.
9. Nap. If you are overwhelmed by the urge to smoke, lie down and have a power nap. If necessary meditate to shut out the world around you and the cravings.
10. Take up a hobby. Cards, knitting, painting, restoring cars or anything else you have always wanted to try. The main point is that you have something to do with your hands.
