Smoking has been proved to affect the mother and her baby during breast feeding. When the mother smokes her nicotine level in the blood and milk will rise therefore she is putting her baby at risk. Many mothers will think about quitting during their breastfeeding time so they will quit and start using nicotine patches, nicotine patches can be much more better if you lower your nicotine level in the patch and you should breastfeed your child after a few hours from applying the patch not directly so the nicotine level in your milk decreases so it becomes better and the risk is decreased. The fewer cigarettes you smoke the less risk of affecting yourself or your baby. The best thing mom’s can do if they can’t quit is to decrease the amount of cigarettes they smoke per day.
If a mum smokes less then 20 cigarettes per day then her baby is in less risk of having problems but if the mum smokes more then 20 cigarettes per day then her child will be in a high risk of being affected by many health problems such as nausea or colic, their child must be also safe from being affected from second hand smoke as it can be also dangerous for them. You can do this by smoking in another room or outside the house. If the baby is exposed to second hand smoke he can be at higher risk of developing health problems such as allergies, pneumonia, bronchitis and possibly sudden infant death syndrome.
Nicotine is a very addictive substance many mums will find it difficult to quit. Applying patches may be an option for them you should apply a patch and breastfeed your child after 3 hours from applying the patch as the nicotine level in your body and milk will decrease do not smoke and apply patches at the same time this will put your child in a very dangerous and high risk of developing serious health problems so avoid using patches and smoking at the same time.
You should remove the patch before going to bed for no side effects such as nightmares. If you are unable to quit the best thing is to reduce the amount of cigarettes you take per day and stay away from your child while smoking and avoid breastfeeding him after smoking. You should wait for 2 hours or 95 minutes to be exact before breastfeeding your child for the amount of nicotine in your milk to decrease.
Always remember to seek medical advice before trying any kind of nicotine replacement therapy such as nicotine patches or gums.
