The Hazards of Smoking to a Mother’s Womb

Image via Wikipedia Smoking is dangerous to everyone, but most especially to women who are pregnant, as smoke that is being inhaled affects the baby in her womb. If you are pregnant already or planning to have a family, it is very important to have information on smoking so that you know what to do and how to avoid it. After all, as a mother, your main concern is to ensure your baby is fit and healthy once you bring it out to the world.

The baby’s height and weight are affected, thus lessening their body resistance, as well as stunting their growth. Aside from that, if you smoke while pregnant, the nicotine that you take in inhibits the baby’s supply of oxygen. If the baby is unable to get ample allocation of oxygen, he or she will not be able to develop properly, mentally, as well as emotionally. Studies have shown that children of mothers who smoked while pregnant have a difficult time adjusting socially with others. This is why doctors strongly discourage this habit.
Offspring of numerous smokers have died of crib death as well, also known as sudden infant death syndrome, which explains why the infant mortality of mothers who smoke while pregnant is up to 50 percent higher than those of mothers who are non-smokers. However, a pregnant woman can still keep her baby safe from peril as long as she quits smoking within the first four months of her pregnancy.
Take note that passive smokers or those who inhale secondhand smoke, may they be mothers or children, are actually in more danger of contracting deadly diseases, like lung cancer, than those who are chain smokers. Therefore it is important not to just quit smoking, but also to steer clear of those who smoke and of areas that are smoke prone.

When starting to quit, enlist the support of your husband, family, and friends so that they can help you. And although it may be difficult at first, always keep in mind that by doing, so you are ensuring the safety of your unborn child and at the same time, protecting his or her future.
